Pollution Chokes African Lives

Maker: World Bank

Length: 5 minutes

Media: Educational Short

Origin: UK/ Nigeria

Against a predicted boom in the future populations of African cities the World Bank examines the current context of environmental pollution in Lagos, Nigeria.

This informational short looks at a variety of acute environmental pollution sources. It shows communities impacted by plastics and oil spills contaminating their water supply. It shows large material waste sites placed nearby to city centres, and those who scavenge among them in order to obtain their daily bread. It also makes a connection between an unreliable electricity supply across the city and carbon monoxide poisoning from back-up generators.

The film asks us to consider four ways to resolve air pollution in expanding African cities: through mass transit, cleaner fuels, moving factories and safe waste disposal.
