Ella Adoo-Kissi Debrah is the first person in the world listed to have air pollution as the cause of her death. She died weeks after high ninth birthday. This film follows Rosamund, her mother, and the plight to raise awareness about pollution levels in London and create new laws regarding air pollution in the United Nations.
The film makes it clear that we do not all breathe the same air. We hear from Ella’s former classmates, and learn about their Choked Up campaign, which speaks up about disproportionate pollution levels in areas of London with a high resident demographic of black, asian and people of colour. Air pollution in this film therefore acts as an entry point into understanding forms of environmental racism, which compound and emphasise existing inequities in our society.
