Complicit is a short documentary which uncovers the working conditions of migrant teenage workers in China who assemble smart phones.
In China, every year around 12 million teenagers leave their home to make a living in a city. These young labourers are often faced with unfair and illegal working conditions, working from 8am-11pm without holidays and with only one night off work in a month. Complicit documents these conditions, speaking to several young workers about why they decided to leave the countryside behind in pursuit of this work.
The documentary also reveals the horrors of benzene exposure - a carcinogenic chemical banned in factory production lines in most countries, but not yet in China. The Bloody Benzene protestors are a coalition of former factory workers who have fought for their lives as a result of their exposure to benzene at work. Removing benzene from electronic goods like smart phones is possible - the maker estimates at $1 USD extra cost per device.
