Between This Air is an installation and film from the Sierra Leone-born artist, poet and filmmaker Julianknxx. The film incorporates spoken word, film and music to explore the beauty and the hardship of black bodies and experiences.
Many of the films scenes are shot in the Barbican’s Conservatory, a green oasis in an otherwise brutalist landscape. Outside the conservatory walls is London, a city where pollution is claiming more black lives than others. Inside these walls and in this imagined space however, life thrives and flourishes.
The film also points towards fashion futures, vibrant, joyous and dystopian. Its connections to afrofuturism are emphasised by a selected quote from Ta-Nehisi Coates, American author and co-writer of the first Black Panther graphic novels. All the time, the chorus continues, reminding us that all we need is the right to breathe.
